December marked the end of our partnership Activat

December marked the end of our partnership Activating Community Leadership course with @uspuoft. This free 9-week course welcomed guest speakers weekly to speak on local issues. The course aimed to support participants in advocating for themselves and their community.

Congratulations to all graduates and special thanks to the @uspuoft, a long-time partner.

As we approach the end of the year, the CL&D team would like to wish everyone time to rest and reflect.

The Centre will be closed from Friday, December 20th, reopening Monday, January 6th. We are excited to reconnect as our refreshed selves in the new year to continue building and supporting community.

With our creative partner @designwith.ca we had the pleasure to work with @maxwellfsims on a Business Strategy Internship with @mitacs wrapping up last month. Through this collaboration, we explored the question, "How might we find opportunity in manufacturing products from home with under explored materials and tools?"

This exploration aligned with our core values in the @regentparksewingstudio to reuse and repurpose materials through collaboration to create one of a kind pieces.

We love the results of the exploration highlighted through both photos and videos. Three products were developed:

Fan: Aiming to use traits of rubber tiles, Fan is an alternative to sticky notes, a quick way to add or remove multiple pieces of paper to the wall while reducing the number of pin holes needed

Curve Tray: A result of folding experiments, it can be easily flattened, slipped into a notebook, and constructed, a catch all for users who change work stations often

Air Basket: Evolved from a door handle that doubles as a place to hang items it's not necessarily suited for, the basket exposes opportunities that may arise through a non traditional connection of materials and processes

In November, we attended the Hidden Talents Film S

In November, we attended the Hidden Talents Film Screening at @gbcollege Waterfront which highlighted the work and cultural practices of local sewists like Asmaa Toulimat, Souher Toulaymat, Lejla Krdzalic, Zohra Bibi, Zohreh Shaba and Urfa Butt. (You may notice many of these names are members of our Sewing Studio!)

Special thanks to the Studio's very own Shahrzad in her dedication in supporting sewists, cultivating community and being a local champion!

EXTENDED APPLICATION DEADLINE: Apply by December 8

EXTENDED APPLICATION DEADLINE: Apply by December 8th for the Immigrant Women Integration Program (IWIP) starting January 2025!

IWIP is a FREE leadership training program for immigrant women interested in community work and the social service sector with goal paths of post-secondary education, job readiness, volunteerism and independence. The program includes placements, micro-credentialing, and certifications!

• Program starts January 14, 2025
• Classes run Monday - Thursday from 11:00am - 2:00pm
• Program length is 5 months + hands-on placement
• Hybrid learning, Online & at CL&D (540 Dundas St East)

Eligibility Includes:
• Newcomer or immigrant women living in Toronto or GTA
• Interest in being a community leader.
• Intermediate computer skills
• Interest in supporting community change

Register today for the Digital Foundations course of our Academic Upskilling Program (AU) starting January 2025!

Digital Foundations is a component of the AU program which can be taken on its own. The course increases participants’ digital literacy and covers topics like using Microsoft Office programs, web search engines, social media, cyber security and more.

• Start Date: January 6, 2025
• Time: Tuesdays from 10:00am - 1:00pm
• Length: 4 - 6 months, depending on learner
• Location: Hybrid, Online & at CL&D (540 Dundas St E)

Eligibility: Must be a resident of Ontario and at least 18 years old.
Further eligibility will be determined when applying.
